Common Swift Hepialus lupulinus. This moth rests with its wings held very tightly along the sides of the body. In the male the tip of the abdomen protrudes upwards from behind the wings. The background colour of the wings may vary from whitish to pale brown or grey, but it always has the silver-white markings. This moth also has unusually short antennae. It flies mainly at dusk, when it may come to house lights, but it does not feed. The male has a characteristically swift flight, low over the ground. At rest females may measure up to 2cm long, but males are much smaller. 2592x3872 |
